We have been visiting Deception Pass since I was very little, about two years old. Unfortunately for the past few years, we haven’t been able to go because of coronavirus. Finally this year we were able to return to this magical state park and we had a blast!
Interesting Things
I think that the top three most interesting things I saw were this awesome hollowed out, fallen tree that acted like an entrance tunnel to a fort on the beach, a weird orange blob that my dad found in the ocean, and finding out more history about a very old tree!
Surprising Things
I think something that surprised me would be how nice and hot the weather was for the middle of May! The hottest part of the day was usually around midday so one of the days, I went swimming and paddle boarding in Cranberry Lake, with my friend. Cranberry Lake is around three minutes from the campground which was good because we had to carry the paddle boards to the lake.
The Funky Tree
Every time we go to Deception Pass, we pay a visit, pretty much everyday, to a tree which we call the “Funky Tree”. It is so much fun to climb and swing off of! This tree is over 900 years old and has been thriving around the dunes of West Beach!
Tide Pools
On one of our days at Deception Pass, went went to Rosario Beach and they had a lot of very interesting tide pools. My dad also saw this weird orange blob on a rock. Does anyone know what it is?
The Campground
Overall, the campground was very nice. It wasn’t too sunny or too shady and it was a good size. The only thing that I didn’t like was that some people had their generator on and it was very loud.
Hiking Goose Rock
We love hikes, so Goose Rock was the perfect hike for us. It has small cliffs to climb, a bridge to admire, and a beautiful view.
Cranberry Lake
Recently, my family got a paddle board so we decided to bring it on this trip. We went to Cranberry Lake and it was perfect! At first, the lake felt cold so I wore my wetsuit over top of my bathing suit, but afterwards when we went swimming, the lake felt warm enough to take off my wetsuit and to just swim in my bathing suit.
Tree Fort Building
No camping trip on the west coast is complete without building forts on the beach with logs, so that’s exactly what we did!
Deception Pass is a family favourite and has something for everyone: beach, lake, hikes, tide pools. Even though it is a couple of hours from our house, the drive is very fun and we always go to Trader Joe’s to pick up groceries and treats that we don’t have in Canada. Even after all of these years of traveling to various other campground, Deception Pass still remains my family’s favourite campground.
